Kimchi, a cabbage-based Korean staple, was recently hailed by Health magazine as one of the five healthiest foods in the world (along with yogurt, olive oil, soy and lentils). Cabbage contains a substance known as vitamin U, which has anti-ulcer properties. Cruciferous vegetables also contain compounds that increase glutathione production in the body. Simply put, glutathione is an antioxidant and is associated as an anti-aging nutrient. So, this is a GOOD THING :). As a note of caution though, while cabbage, along with other cruciferous vegetables, has a reputation for lots of good things namely protection against gastritis and ulcers, don’t overdo it. These vegetables have the potential to cause gas but mostly due to fermentation processes, and the last thing somebody with GERD wants is bloating and more GI discomfort. In my opinion if you have bloating or GERD you should be checked by a functional medicine doctor to find why you have the bloating or GERD. There are several things that can treat the person not the system, that way they heal properly.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common digestive condition that affects many people. It occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn, chest discomfort, and irritation of the esophageal lining. Diet and lifestyle factors often play a major role in the development and management of GERD symptoms. Many patients choose to explore treatment options through a functional medicine clinic in Columbus where digestive health, diet, and gut microbiome balance are evaluated to address the root causes of reflux.
